The pack to start it all off, a shiny red foil wrapper filled with 10 waxy cards.  What a way to start out the New Year!  Jen woke me up this morning with the smell of bacon wafting in the air.  Day 1 has started with the words bacon, baseball cards, bowl games, steak, and writing bouncing around in my head. Sounds like the start of a great day, right?

Before I crack the first pack open, I need to set some ground and procedural rules for this project.  For the first 24 days I will be opening a pack a day from 24 pack 2013 Bowman Baseball Retail Box.  A 24 pack box such as this one consists of two piles of 12 pack stacks inside the box.  I will refer to the left pile as left packs 1-12 and the right as right 13-24.  In doing this I want to track what number packs in each box deliver the best hits.  When visiting a hobby shop as a child, I had an owner swear to me that the best cards and inserts were found in the fourth pack down of each stack in an untouched box.  For the most part throughout my years of collecting this “rule” when selecting a pack has delivered some great hits.  This project will put the fourth pack down selection process to the test. Today will start out the project with left pack 1, the very first pack on the stack.  So here it goes, time to become the Wax Cracker!

Overall, it was a lackluster pack except for the gold John Jay.  Just like going to a casino, you can’t expect to hit on every game you play or pack you open.  You have to take the good packs with the bad and ride the wave until the big hit.

On the 24th day when I finish this Bowman Retail Box I will recap the good hits and what packs they came from.  As I open more boxes I will be able to compare the hits from every box.  Are packs put in the box at random or do companies plant them, we shall see.  If you have any other things you want me to keep track of please let me know.

This project will be a learning experience for me and I don’t want to come off as a know it all when it comes to collecting.  Please feel free to chime in, it will be fun to get a discussion going.  I highly encourage you to post your daily hits as I go along on my pack opening journey.  I’d love to see what you all are cracking and hitting on.

For the rest of the day I will try to put some pictures together of my collection.  At any point if you see a card you want or have been looking for please send me an offer.  Anything can be made available for the right price, and if I can flip some of my hits it will help keep this project going for the next 365.

As for the world of sports today, congrats go out to Bill O’Brien for accepting the Houston Texans job.  I had hoped he would stay at Penn State and help turn a terrible story into a good one.  He was doing a heck of a job leading that turnaround, but I can understand how it would be hard to turn down a NFL head coaching gig.  I’m looking forward to the Rose Bowl tonight.  The ‘Grand Daddy of Em All’ has always been my favorite bowl game to watch. It should be a close one tonight.  I’m going to go with the Stanford Smarties in this one, based solely on Michigan State’s best defender, Max Bullough, being suspended.

I hope you all have a Happy New Years Day today!  Please drop me a note and lets talk some sports and card collecting.  Until tomorrow, go crack some wax!
